Systemic family psychotherapy – the family as a system

Systemic family psychotherapy sees each person as a member of a wider system: the family. It looks at the person’s place within it, the roles they take on, and the values and rules that shape relationships between family members.

What the systemic approach is Systemic family therapy took root in Greece in the early 1960s, when Giorgos and Vaso Vassiliou founded the Athenian Institute of Anthropos (AKMA).

The family as a system It works with today’s complex and blended families, including:

  • marriages, divorces, second and third marriages,
  • children from different partners, through adoption or IVF,
  • same-sex couples, and more.

Over time, the issues it addresses have widened to include:

  • marital conflict, separation and divorce,
  • deviant behaviour,
  • difficulties with parents,
  • various forms of emotional distress.

The patient’s symptom is directly affected by the family, and in turn affects it, both before and after recovery.

Family factors play an important role in the psychological and physical difficulties of children. These include poor marital adjustment, a strained parent–child relationship, low family cohesion, lack of affection and parental divorce. The difficulties include depression¹ ², headaches, asthma, bedwetting, hyperactivity and learning difficulties.

«The aim of systemic family psychotherapy is to help people increase their inner cohesion to the point where they can direct themselves, continue to grow and reduce dysfunction in themselves and in others».
